Skied up from around km 16-17 on the Cushing FSR. Went up to around 1860 m then had some of the best turns we’ve ever experienced coming down through a older burn. No signs of instability on our run, but we kept it to slopes below ~30 degrees. Face shots and Devine loveliness under our feet made for a day to remember. Further snow pit nerdiness in the snowpack section.
Snowpack
Quick pit at 1734m on S aspect in slightly sheltered trees at edge of burn, 18 deg slope. HS 270 cm HST 45 cm, then another 45 cm of 4F hardness snow until a 5 cm layer of facets overlying a 5 cm thick melt crust. Back to 4F below the melt crust until the bottom of our pit (120 cm total). Mayyyy have seen the remnants of the January buried surface hoar down around 120 cm depth. Had CTH30 non-planar break down 45 on storm snow interface. Didn’t do any other tests.
Avalanche
Observed numerous avalanches on the N aspect slopes along the Cushing FSR, across the valley from us. Suspect they are from the past weekend’s storm cycle.
