Weather
Spring like conditions on the 18th. Today on the 19th, periods of light snow early led to steady light snow by mid morning continuing into the early afternoon. 1-2" of new snow by the time I left WCP around 1300. Moderate SW winds at treeline.
Snowpack
No signs of instability. A variety of old snow surface conditions may not provide a good bond for future significant snows (maybe this weekend?): Stout melt freeze and wind crusts on many aspects near and above treeline that have been exposed to sunny and persistent windy conditions. Old, soft snow surfaces are composed of cohesionless facets up to 30 cm deep where small (D1), harmless loose snow slides can be easily triggered.
Avalanche
No recent avalanche activity observed along the highway corridor or in the South San Juan Wilderness. The last significant observed activity was a month ago.
