Over the past few days out in the same general area, I've noticed a rapid growth in surface hoar, and a noticable drop in the ski penetration. The boot penetration is still belly deep, but the ski penetration is now under 20cm. The surface hoar is widespread, and generally in the 3mm range, however it's not uncommon to find large grains in the 6-9mm neighborhood. In some places you can even find quarter sized grains.
