Catamount Peak

Went out to Catamount Peak and skied the East Face of Catamount Peak. We approached via Balu Pass, and did the high sneak. Here’s some details regarding our trip: -Dropping Over Balu Pass: Significant loose dry and loose wet avalanches up to size 2 were reported around 11am on SW aspects. Upper 20cms of snow saw significant sun effect, with slight glopping occurring later in the day (around 1pm). -Catamount High Sneak: The high sneak was in, albeit rocky. About 50cms of faceted snow and wind-affected snow sat atop the rocks on SW aspects. Numerous loose wet and dry up to size 2 was observed on these aspects during daytime warming. Most slopes near rocks had significant loose dry and point release avalanches. -Catamount East Face: Wind-loaded and sun preserved snow on the NE shoulder. The face was a mix of wind loading, sheltered pow, and old wind slab paths. Unbelievable snow on the face and the descent. By mid-afternoon (3pm) a thin sun crust had formed on anything with sun exposure. Overall one of the best days out I’ve had in awhile! Amazing riding conditions. Just be mindful of loose dry/wet near rocks when the sun comes out!

Did a few hand shears in wind-loaded slopes in the alpine on NE aspects. Saw stubborn hand shears down 50cms below the wind affected snow.
