Skied the North North East side of Zoa Peak today. 40cm ski pen made for tough trail breaking. Noted numerous whumpfs and cracking on climb up. Skied very conservative, supported features (1300m - 1750m). North aspects stayed nice and fluffy throughout the day, 3-5cm sun crust formed on solar aspects by the end of the day.
Weather
Temps consistent around -6 C (1300m-1700m) throughout the day. -3 C at the car at 15:00. Strong solar input throughout day.
Snowpack
Test profile at 1700m, NNE aspect, 37 degree slope, CTM 11 RP down 15 (storm interface), CTM 14, SP down 90 (facets on crust), CTH 21 SP down 90 (facets on crust). While we were digging test profile, another party triggered avalanche on nearby convex feature, bed surface was crust layer down 90-100cm.
Avalanche
Members of another party ski cut a steep convex roll. Avalanche propagated through steep unskiable terrain into gully features on either side. Bed surface appeared to be facets on top of crust 90-100cm down. Slide ran into ski lines, and stopped in dense trees below. No involvement. Slide propagated surprising distance wrapping around steep cliff feature out of the photos.
