Weather

Cold and clear. 15 F when we set out from Berthoud Pass parking lot at 9 am. Time of slide was 9:50 am.

Snowpack

6-inch wind slab on top of 2+ ft of very loose depth hoar. Small trees and rocks poking through snow.

Avalanche

We dug a shallow pit and noticed a very weak 2-ft + layer of hoar beneath a 6-inch thick wind slab crust. As I widened the pit with a ski tail the slab broke loose, slid, continued to break across the gully, and took the snow from the next gully with it. Head scarp was approx 1-ft high. Slide is visible from Current Creek parking lot.
