Snowpack

Short tour on Huntsman's Ridge (McClure Pass) yesterday. North-facing at 10,000 ft: Typical depth hoar but strong mid-pack even though HS was only about 60-70 cm. 5-7 cm of new snow over the last couple of days had a layer of surface hoar, crystals 3-6 mm. No recent activity, wind loading, cracking or collapsing observed. Ski penetration about 20 cm. South facing: mixed conditions of soft snow and suncrust. Crust about 5 cm, well-bonded to softer snow below. Ski pen 5-10 cm.=
