Up portal creek for about 1 km before trying to find the line of least resistance up the NE ridge. Trail breaking was horrendous with ski penetration up to 1m. Snowpack below treeline is all facets. We had whumping and settlements on a bench at the treeline/alpine interface but this was not in avalanche terrain. Higher up in the alpine, we hit a hard crust that could 've required ski crampons. We traversed to the pass NE of the real summit and skied down mellow open glades with relativeley deep, dry powder to the Portal creek trail and our exit. No signs of recent avalanche activity. No caribou!
