Dug pit at near 1700m (35 degree slope) just below N facing ridgetop to investigate reported buried surface hoar. Total snow depth: (225cm) Pit Depth: (225-100cm) Compression Test Results: CTM 13 (200cm), CTH 21, (190cm), CTH 29 (140cm) *All 3 yielded sudden drop consistency* Snow interface within Snow Pit (Top down): 225-215cm (4 finger), 215-200cm (1 finger) *defined layer from recent wet storm*, 200-190cm (1 finger), 190-140cm (pencil) *defined buried surface hoar layer at 140cm (4 finger), 140-115cm (1 finger), 115-100cm (pencil). Riding was: mediocre with bits of fun at the right elevation. No whumpfing or shooting cracks within the day. Within the top/mid part of the snowpack before you get to the 80cm buried surface hoar layer the snowpack is very well kept together and bonded so its clear when this layer is failing its demonstrating slab like tendencies. Visual evidence of similar avalanches that were reported recently that we saw across the chilkooot on Mt. Hoffman maybe 1500m elevation with clearly up to 100cm crown on relatively mellow NE Facing convexed slope but prone to crossloading.
