This observation was made on the Ripinsky main trail, temperature was -5C, clear and sunny, light NW wind. We observed multiple signs of instability on our tour up the trail above 2,000ft. We heard whumping, saw shooting cracks when we did a switchback test. On hand shears along the trail we found a weak, faceted layer under the new storm layer of snow. We dug a pit and found a weak layer at about 20 cm from the top. CT12 down about 20 cm. ECTP 5 propagated all the way across on the same layer. In small facets between February 22nd and 24th's new snow. PST end 20/100. Originally posted by AIARE Level 1 Haines on alaskasnow.org
