Field day 1 for AST2 out of Selkirk College. Our group ascended the slope just east of Whales Back. Open fields were stable and allowed us to punch a good up track in. However, anything in or below the trees is icy and compact. Summited the ridge between Whales Back and East Peak, dug a couple pits on the northern faces just below the ridgeline. We had an extended column test that propagated on the 19th hit – ECTP (19), the failure occurred on the Jan 11 SH approximately 34cm down. Visibility was poor and the test changed our minds about northern aspects. We proceeded further east along the ridgeline and skied open fields back to the vehicles.
