Snowpack

This area of the Aspen zone contains one of the shallower snowpacks in the forecast area. Below treeline snow depths were we traveled were well under 1 meter. On the southerly aspects at lower elevations, we found only 40-50 cm HS. In these lower snow depth areas, storm snow from the second half of January has started started to facet. Sheltered lower elevation slopes held a snowpack made up of mostly facets and depth hoar, with a midpack slab found only in isolated areas. We had to travel closer to treeline where snow depths exceeded 1 meter, to find that stronger midpack slab with weak layers below it.
