Picturesque day in the San Juans. Mostly clear skies, blustery winds above TL 15-30mph from the North. Temps hovered around 15°F. 12hr snow accumulation of approx. 5cm.
Snowpack
There is a lot of energy in the snowpack. New snow accumulation of approx. 30cm, BTL boot penetration of 35cm, deeper areas exist on leeward slopes. Localized cracking, collapsing, and wumphfing were prolific throughout the tour. Strong winds causing snow transportation has lead to thick, consolidated areas, especially above treeline and near ridgetops. Unlocalized cracking was observed on these slopes with more consolidated snow.
Avalanche
Multiple natural avalanches were observed on all aspects NTL and >TL. One remote triggered avalanche was observed on Hudson road, SS, W aspect, NTL, and from approx. 50 ft away. Avalanches seem to slide on new/old snow interface where a weaker facet layer/suncrust exists. Evidence of an older natural SS, W aspect avalanche was observed from the parking lot of RMP. Evidence of point releases entraining more snow and widening were also observed NTL and >TL
