Avalanche
A snowboarder triggered an R1, D1 avalanche approximately 40 feet wide and 100 feet long in a steep, treed area. The rider in another party stated to our party that he triggered the avalanche while making a ski cut. The approximately 1.5-foot crown consisted of snow from the series of storms last week on a bed surface of older, faceted snow. The snowboarder yelled "slide" as several skiers, including the author of this report, were transitioning on a flat surface about 100 feet below the location where the avalanche debris came to rest. No one was caught, buried or injured in the slide. The rider acknowledged the potential avalanche risks on the slope: a rollover as well as multiple rocks serving as trigger points.
