1:00 pm day 1 of bootpacking NE 12,000ft It felt very warm. Moderate wind gusts in and off. Clouds hovered in and out all day. Didn’t even need a puffy jacket during the lunch break. It felt a little green-house. Wind 11 mph Temp 36 F Dew point 18 RH 29
Snowpack
HS average 14 3/4 in (I took three measurements) I noticed a density change in the snow but didn’t get a chance to measure how thick the top layer was. Seemed like 3-5 inches of 17ish percent density above the sugary snow at the bottom. I didn’t look under a loop but the crystals looked sharp at ground level and appeared to be around 1mm. I definetly saw some squared edges. This was all observed at 12,000 ft. As soon as we dropped to around 11,000 ish ft (rain line night before was around 10,000) the snow seemd more consolidated. I’m judging this by the fact that the bootpacking got much easier due to our steps becoming “stickier†Human triggered roller balls up to 3 ft high by 3 pm around 11,000 ft and below.
