Cheops North Bowl

Skinned up Connaught Creek to ski the North Bowl of Cheops. On the uptrack most slide paths had avy debris that appeared to be day or two old wet slabs around size 1.5-2. We found a gap in the cornice and entered the bowl via a convex rollover which released a small size 1 wind slab with the first rider and some hangfire released with the second rider. Skied about 20cm of light dry powder down to the creek.

A mixed bag of spring weather had a bit of everything. Scattered clouds brought a mix of sun and light snow/wind which kept the temperature from rising too much too fast

Our snowpack observations were in line with the avalanche forecast. Above 2000m it is still winter with plenty of light and dry snow on shaded aspects. Snow on solar aspects got heavy fast and 1750m and below was nice spring corn/slush. No major signs of instability were observed

On the approach we observed multiple day or two old slides with start zones around tree line averaging size 2 on East and West facing aspects as well as a couple large crowns on neighboring peaks. (pics. 1 & 2) While dropping into the North Bowl the first skier ski cut and triggered a small size 1 wind slab on an unsupported convex rollover. (pic. 3)
