We had a very close call on Friday (25th) on young’s peak. The cornice near the summit collapse as we were just leaving the top and stepped back all the way to the skin track. The failure was 40m long and 5m back from the edge. The first and second photos is a before and after. The second one shows a section of cornice in the background still hanging, everything in front of it to where I was standing to take the photo failed. Cracks in the snow are visible on the photos and come right up to where we were standing on the skin track. We had left plenty of space but really not enough as those cornices have built up over the winter and carry some heavy weight. The day was warm and overcast with light winds, east aspect. Incident occurred at 1500.
