This report reflects riding conditions on January 23 at Red Mtn. Cabin. Dug three pits at treeline (approx. 1800 m) - west, south and NE aspects. Average snow depth was 2 meters. Compression tests included storm snow (15-20 cm thick) failing on wind affected layer (medium 15-hard 29 results). Sub-surface layers are dense (three fingers) due to wind. Facet/hoar weak layer lower in the snow pack at 100 + cm. Natural activity on northerly, steep (>50 degrees) aspects, starting at ridge crests due to shallow snow pack (this is old activity). Snow on solar aspects sun/warming, resulting in slight to medium sun crusts. Freezing rain night of January 24th at cabin and above, resulting in nasty crust. Overall, snow pack stable on low angle slopes (<32 degrees).
