Spent Friday and Saturday exploring Jubilee Bowl/Mt Murray. Variable snow conditions, lots of wind effect from E/SE winds (scoured slopes on windward slopes, wind deposited snow on ridge top/lee slopes) and lots of sun hitting the south facing slopes. We avoided these areas. We rode shady/sheltered areas mostly below tree line and found some pretty fun riding, about 10cm powder on a fairly consolidated base. Pit test on Jan 29 on NE facing ridge at about 1750m showed a mostly consolidated snow pack, but there was about 25cm of really loose/sugary faceted snow in snowpack of about 145cm, likely depth hoar. CTM 17 failed on these facets with a fairly sudden pop. Felt a bit spooky to me and we made conservative terrain choices from here. I would definitely keep this in mind as the season goes on and recommend doing some further tests if you want to get into the steeper terrain out here and avoid shallow snowpack areas where this could be triggered more easily. Pit test on Jan 30 in a more sheltered area at about 1600m seemed really consolidated throughout the whole 160cm snowpack. No results in a column test. Some slight faceting occurring in the bottom 15cm but was feeling much more consolidated than the pit from the previous day. Long story short, keep depth hoar in mind out here as the season goes on!
