Few clouds, calm winds from the NW down in the meadows but very cold, strong winds on the ridgeline. Pit was dug on a N aspect at 11,787 ft. 15 degree slope angle. Air temp was 3.2 degrees F
Snowpack
Pit was dug at 1015 Height of snow: 50 cm 32 cm foot pen / 20 cm ski pen Surface temp: 6.8 F Fist and four finger hardness all the way thru. I found well developed faceted grains 32 cm down from the surface (18cm from the ground). A compression test yielded a sudden collapse at this interface at 18cm on tap #14. I also had a failure within the layers of new snow very near the snow surface when I place the shovel on my CT block! There was approx 3 in of new snow.
