Northern San Juan
AvalancheJeff Davis · Feb 28, 2018 · Northern San Juan
Weather
1-2 inches of new snow observed. Moderate westerly winds lightly moved snow near and above treeline. Clouds were in and out, but sun was strong when not obstructed.
Snowpack
The mid-pack slab is breaking down below treeline on shady, protected slopes. On open slopes below treeline, the slab is getting weaker but still exists specifically on north and east. Westerly winds drifted snow onto leeward slopes. At lower elevations and sunny slopes, a thin crust was forming in the afternoon. Dirty snow observed in the upper snowpack. No cracking or collapsing.
Avalanche
No new avalanche activity, but got a good look at the recent natural activity in Upper Waterfall off Yellow Mountain.
