Deep on Boulder

It was our first day out sledding, and conditions were surprisingly good. We parked around 600 m on the Kirkup and could sled easily from there. There was about 100 cm of snow at Boulder cabin and we measured around 130 to 150 cm around treeline. We travelled conservatively with it being our first day out and with a lack of visibility. The temperature also increased, with it being around 0 C and light rain at treeline mid-afternoon. Our snow profile at treeline found about 20 to 30 cm of recent snow above a fairly consolidated snowpack. A hard melt-freeze crust was found about 40 cm off the ground, with some small surface hoar beneath it that produced a sudden result on our compression test. No other signs of instability were noted, just fun riding conditions in the rolling hills on Boulder. Watch out for the creeks and shallow-buried trees!
