Snowing, wind 10-20 mph, 30 deg f. at 8600 ft, 26 deg f. at 10600 ft. NNW aspect

Snowpack

8-14" thick storm slab above 8-14" of large facets. Above trail ridge road in virgin snowpack I experienced lots of whoomphing, settling, full collapse, and shooting cracks. Fractures generally propagating up and across the hill towards trees or convex features. I was on low angle terrain, 20 deg., NNW facing. With the soft slab fairly consolidated and the facets so weak there was collapse with nearly every step.
