Intermittent periods of sun, light snow and clouds. Moderate winds out of the north. Temperatures in the single digests.
Snowpack
5 inches of light and fluffy snow fell in the Red Mountain Pass area overnight. North winds during the day were strong enough to move the snow loading and cross-loading slopes. Soft slabs developed, but were overall small and harmless at that time. This however could change overnight as winds have picked up this evening. In the alpine the new and wind-loaded snow fell on a mixture of snow surfaces that were battered by last weeks strong winds. The new snow covered rocks on slopes that were recently scoured and did not bond well to firm snow surfaces on steep slopes. Lower angle slopes out of the wind offered excellent traveling conditions. Isolated cracking in the new snow and no collapsing observed.
