When I got to the top of the ridge I noticed a rather large avalanche that had occurred in the last few hours [See http://avalanche.state.co.us/caic/obs/obs_report.php?obs_id=37601 for details]. ... Around the edges of the slide path, the snow was very weak with 8-14 inches of new snow with weak snow underneath. Several times I ended up sinking in the snow about 2-3 feet into the sugar snow underneath the new snow.
