Snowpack

Looking over paths above treeline, there are many rocks exposed in the mid to lower part of these paths. Deeper snow can be found in narrow couloirs or gullies, but it is most likely a hard and slick snow surface, making it challenging to travel on steeper slopes. Without much warning, these harder slabs taper, quickly, and can catch a skier off guard and punch through into weak snow underneath. The weakest snow is on sheltered slopes on North and Easterly aspects near treeline. Also, variations in the snow are more likely to be found on these same sheltered slopes.
