Day felt balmy at -6oC. Low visibility as it was snowing <1cm/hr at first but then cleared to broken skies. We skied 18cm of new snow which from 2200m and upwards sat on a hard crust. I didn’t dig a full pit this time but half of one to know what was under that stiff wind slab. It took pounding with my shovel to break through the 10cm bomber slab which revealed 40cm+ of loose decomposing snow. Yikes!

I didn’t have my magnifier to ID the crystals but none of them were binding. A huge change from my previous pits and observations of the mid-pack. This hard crust/windslab felt bomber - wouldn’t break jumping on it - and skiing it was like skiing a groomer with 18cm of fresh snow on. But my worry is of the snow underneath it: if it gets triggered IMO it will go big.
