This avalanche occurred on a non-lift/hike only access area of Smokey Mountain Ski Club and was the indirect result of open pit mining blasting at a near by iron ore mine. Blast initiated within 1km of slope. There was layer of ice from Christmas/Boxing Day Rain and the slope was recently wind loaded with a storm slab. During blasting days at this iron ore pit, the ski hill is non-operation and guards are posted.
