This was dug in a sheltered area at road level on flat ground. Overall, the distribution of the snowpack is quite variable in the surrounding area due to wind reaching up to 2m in loaded locations and scratched to nothing or icy crusts on windward slopes. Pretty tough digging once you got to the Nov 24 crust at 60cm due to a very tough midpack where rain has penetrated through the snow leaving runnels and ice lenses. Other the surface snow, the weakest snow lies around the remnants of the Halloween crust 35 cm above the ground. No significant shears on a compression test either when the back is cut to the ground through the November 24 crust and midpack layers or when you stop the saw at this upper crust.
