Tantalus March 28-30th

I guided guests in the Tantalus flying in Wednesday and out today, Friday.

On the flight in we observed a widespread natural cycle up to sz 3 mainly from Alpine N aspects but several Treeline features as well. Steep wind-loaded lee ridge top features as well as Alp and TL convex features were the main terrain type to produce avalanches.

We found widespread wind effect. Thursday through to Friday morning there was strong to extreme winds from the SW with about 25cm for new storm snow. There was widespread melt-freeze and sun crust below 1750 Meters.

We skied sub 30 degree well supported terrain with no hazard from above between 2300-1800 meters. I was rating the avalanche hazard as high in this region from Wednesday through to Friday morning. On the flight out I also noticed new avalanches 8-24 hours old to sz 2.5 on North East and East aspects at Alp and TL.
