Snowpack

Very shallow and weak snowpack in the Ashcroft area below 11,000 ft. This region of the Aspen zone holds less snow when compared to areas further north and east. Snowpack below treeline consisted of only 3 layers, surface hoar, some surface facets, and a lower layer of depth hoar on the shady northerly aspects. Depths averaged under 50 cm with only 10cm of snow at the trailhead. South facing terrain near and below treeline is mostly bare ground at this time. At higher elevations, the snowpack remains highly variable with pockets of older wind slabs interspersed with areas of wind scoured snow and bare ground.
