Rain in Ouray, but snow on the pass all the way to Coal Bank. Large flakes and high precip intensity for short periods of time. Temperatures in the low 30's with light winds.
Snowpack
2"-4" inches of new snow fell during the afternoon hours Wednesday. The snow was wet and heavy and fell onto a refrozen surface. The surface freeze was strong enough to hold the weight of a human on foot walking to and from study plots. The new snow was not enough at that time to increase hazard. In general, many of the paths along 550 have melted out,specifically the smaller problematic paths just above the highway. Only a few paths remain continue to have a smooth sliding surface for avalanches. Lower Blue Point, Eagle, Coal Creek and the Brooklyn's are a few of the last few paths that pose any threat. It seems as if most paths have significant drainage and warming new snow remains the greatest avalanche issue.
