Lutak Zone: Good quality riding at middle elevations where the wind hasn't blown the snow off and away. The current snowpack is a menagerie of decomposing ice crusts and weak, facet layers topped by a cohesive slab of varying depth and hardness. In an elevation band between 1000ft and 1900ft, had widespread whumphing and collapsing, on a nasty layers of facets 25cm down (see pit 1). Higher up, the slab was thinner, the facets not as pronounced and so fewer signs of instability were noted. Above all, the take home from the last few days seemed to be that our snowpack is one of intense variability. The combinations of facets, crusts, depth hoar and slabs (and even some surface hoar for good measure) are highly variable across elevations, locations and time.
