Armed with dollar store flamingo umbrellas and a plastic rain poncho, we headed out into the downpour for a wander up Seymour toward Mystery Peak. Stepping off the packed trail, it was easy to punch through the heavy, wet snow without snowshoes. Despite several days of intense precipitation in the area, the snowpack seemed largely unaffected by the continued rain. We dug a pit on an east-facing slope at 1200 m and found nearly 2 meters of snow — more than we had expected. Compression tests showed no reactivity, and the layers appeared well-bonded with no slab potential. We didn’t linger long, though. Even with all our rain gear, we were still getting soaked. Definitely a spot worth returning to—ideally on a day when the views make an appearance.
