Beautiful cold day (temps rising from -17 to -8 over the day). Light S/SW winds. We found a thin breakable crust laying on 5 cm of decomposed crystals below tree line. Then, in the alpine, mostly wind pressed snow, old avalanche debris, a couple of sastrugis, the occasional patches of softer snow and rotten snow when reaching the more rocky section under the ridge at 2500 m. The higher we got,the harder the snow surface, and ski crampons may be useful, or crampons if boot packing steeper slopes. The skiing...read the description above in reverse. Not great, not horrible either. The lower part skied actually better than expected. Good edges and/or solid legs helpful on steeper terrain, one might slide a long way if missing a turn. All in all, a good day out.
