Snowpack

22 cm of settled storm snow since Sunday in the upper snowpack in this area. This new snow sat on a layer of small surface facets on NW-E aspects. Tilt tests on this interface produce moderate Q1 failures. Storm snow layer still F hard near and below treeline and cracks would propagate only a few feet in this layer. Strong radiation today forming melt freeze crusts at snow surface on SE-W aspects. Rapid settlement of storm snow on the southerly aspects. Lower snowpack depth hoar layer is still the major snowpack problem here. Large collapses and shooting cracks still occurring. Remote triggered avalanches still possible, especially near treeline where we traveled.
