Widespread storm events through the Rockies have brought large quantities of wet snow from summit to valley bottom, after extended periods of drought. The rock was exceptionally dry and will have saturated deeply prior to freezing. Large rockfalls events have been witnessed and should be expected as the moisture froze creating frost shattering. All overhead rock terrain should be treated with extreme respect.
We witnessed enormous rockfall over many sport climbs in the Little Russia crag. My party was under the big roof enjoying the dry location and watched 2-3 tons of rock come down across the canyon. This is an extreme swing in conditions and should be treated with care. Helmets are not the only solution for this type of event, position as well as route choice must be considered the primary hazard mitigation. Take care over the next few weeks as things settle back out.
