Snowpack

Near-Treeline the snowpack is weakening to a point where there is very little slab. Where I dug was a more wind-drifted feature which is where you maybe could still pop a slab in the snow at the surface. This slabs were spotty across the terrain located either just after steep rollovers or along tree bands that had drifted snow. Near Treeline has the most weak surface snow so gave the best riding but will also be the area that becomes dangerous first with new load. Above treeline I probed all around the southeast facing bowl I skied. Snow depths varied from about 40cm to 60cm. The snow was mostly weak with a little slab development but the firmer slabs were generally restricted to close to ridgelines. This area was only holding patchy faceted snow at the surface as the winds had moved it around and was using the facets to exfoliate my face!
