Avalanche

Remote triggered, sheltered, unsupported chute. Feature was about 80m long and on average about 8m wide. Approx 40 degrees incline, and spilling into 50+ degree terrain at features end…at which point you’d be high up in the toe of the rocks with the open bowl beneath you. The avalanche gouged at the fans but didn’t propagate at the spill zone. Touring around the last couple days witnessed plenty of whoops and shooting cracks. Shears everywhere but no avalanches triggered. I think the unsupported nature of this feature allowed for the tensile failure. Seems to me that some of the steeps have already cycled on that SH layer. Some zones had only about 10cms ( just the most recent storm) of soft snow above the crust. If that condition remains constant on the slope I think your free and clear..but the distribution seems patchy. If you’re skiing on 30cms ( the last two storms) of soft snow consider that SH layer intact and take note!..preferably before you’re committed.
