Snowpack

Around 15-20 cm of settled storm snow on top of the snowpack here from last weeks snow. Another surface hoar has formed on top of the snowpack. Grain sizes were largest near valley bottom, generally below 10,500, where they reached 1 cm in size. Smaller surface hoar present at higher elevations, but only on shady northerly aspects. It had been destroyed by strong radiation on any slope getting direct sun. Mild temperatures and strong radiation created moist snow below treeline on southeast and south aspects today. This quickly froze into a thin crust on top of the snowpack by late afternoon. Little change to lower snowpack weak layers. Facets and depth hoar dominate the middle and lower snowpack on most slopes. Depth hoar grains approaching 3mm size on shady northerly aspects.Found old wind slabs near treeline in the mid pack from both north and south winds earlier this season. These are still a concern for triggered avalanches in steeper terrain.
