Significant surface hoar event overnight, 3-4mm, formed on top of crusts on SE, S, SW aspects at mid and low elevation, and on top of faceting powder on more shaded aspects. Did not see the SH at upper elevations where there was some wind affect overnight. Periods of solar this morning cooked some of the surface hoar down, in other areas it appeared to be intact as snow began. The new snow was falling without wind, preserving the surface conditions as it fell.
