Traveled on northerly facing terrain below treeline. The Nov ice layer is 70-90 cm below the surface. It was present in open areas, but not under trees where the canopy may have prevented it from forming. There is a very distinct, 2 cm thick layer of F to 4F hard of rounding facets just above the crust, with a 1F to P hard slab above.
Despite the yellow flags, we did not get any CT, ECT or DTT results in the facets. Very, very hard shovel shears would get a sudden planar failure right below the slab.
The Dec and Jan crusts were visibly faceting, and had the consistency of brittle styrofoam. The surface hoar buried on 1/16 was not large or widespread.
