AST-2 Course. Group of 8 skied Cornice ridge from lower lot. 10 cm of fresh observed in the morning, 2-5 cm's fell throughout the day picking up at the end of the day. Moderate SE winds with temps 0 to -4, cooling with elevation. Total snowpack 150 cm on average at treeline. Significant cracking noted in open areas, active wind loading observed. Jan. 9 surface hoar present from 2500 to 4200 ft. Snow pits dug at 4200 ft, west facing aspect in gladed trees at treeline. Compression test - mod (sudden planar) down 30 cm on suspsect Jan. 9 surface hoar. No naturals observed but visibility poor. Skier triggered wind slabs (size 1) at 3500 - 4200. Skier controlled and remote avalanches (size 1) in creek gullies at 3000 ft on surface hoar.
