As the snowpack shifts into a springtime melt freeze pattern we are starting to wrap up the team’s field season. Today we went into Renshaw and pulled out the weather station. It was a lot of digging! While a good overnight freeze made for a thick crust, strong morning stability and overheated sleds, there was plenty of evidence of large loose wet and some wet slab avalanches from daytime heating. These avalanches generally started in rocky alpine areas on sunny slopes and in some cases these were running the full length of the avalanche path. We didn’t do any riding but kept an eye open for signs of the snowpack weakening like roller balls and increasing track penetration. All in all it was a good day of digging in the sun!
