Todays word of the day is WINDY! While driving to Hankin for our field way we noted significant amounts of snow cascading off of every mountain in view, as well as snow transport taking place below tree line in heavily forested locations. We observed a size 2 natural wind slab avalanche from NE alpine but were limited by poor visibility due to blowing snow. We also noticed the run out of the King Louis couloir on Hudson Bay Mountain looked to have a fresh deposit in the run out. Testing yielded mixed results but what they all boiled down to is the Jan 26 crust facet combo is the one to watch. With the added snow load and increased density that the wind is providing, this layer will be prone to heightened propagation potential, reactivity and will have the bed surface and mass to carry far into run out zones. You'll find us reigning it in and enjoy to powder in the sheltered areas while this all shakes out.
