Had a great day up at Grassy Mountain in Manning Park today. We skinned up from the ski area parking lot to Grassy Mountain along the Poland Lake Trail. Skinning through the 15-20cm of fresh snow today was much easier than our experience at Manning last week. We dug a pit at the top of Grassy Mountain. Total snow depth was 130cm and three distinct layers appeared: ~30cm fresh storm snow, 50cm consolidated storm snow, and 50cm of highly-consolidated, high-moisture snow. A compression test yielded resistant planar fractures 10cm (9 light wrist taps) and 25cm (5 moderate elbow taps) deep. We geared up and enjoyed an excellent ride down.
