Snowpack
Traveled on west, northwest, north, and northeast aspects near and below treeline. Snowpack has become very weak and unconsolidated during most recent dry spell. Approx. 20 inches of snowfall during the first half of December has settled to approx. one foot of F to 4F- slab below treeline. Near treeline slab is thicker and only slightly stiffer. Significant wind-effect to the surface from strong north winds (almost one week prior) noticed on northerly-facing terrain near and above treeline. Snowpack is supportable while traveling on skis, but boot penetration is to the ground in most locations. Advanced mid-pack facets around multiple melt-freeze crusts are the layers of concern. Did not observe propagating results in stability test or other signs of instability such as cracking or collapsing. However, very weak snowpack structure exist below unconsolidated slab and will have a difficult time supporting a new load with wind.
