Snowpack
South facing slopes were impenetrable with upside down pole, consolidated new snow above an extremely hard layer. South East and East facing slopes had softer snow, with multiple melt freeze crusts for about 1-2 ft on top of weak facets. By 10:30 these slopes had started to become wet and heavy, no crazy wet avalanche activity but definitely sluff and roller balls. Moved to north facing slopes below tree line, snow was much cooler and softer. Didn’t dig down but no signs of instability.
Avalanche
Saw a small east facing surface slide. Looked wet, could have been a wind slab given the crown height. No tracks near by, started on a convex wind loaded roll and fanned out from there. Saw some other wind slabs underneath cornices in the distance.
