We hiked up Christmas Gully yesterday to Mount Strachan. The snow was crusty enough to hold our weight most of the time, but soft enough for us to get some decent steps in with our boots. We didn’t have to use our crampons. Halfway up we took out our probes and couldn’t hit the ground with 240 cm probe. Every fourth or fifth step we would punch through the snow. Limited visibility at the summit and pulled out FATMAP to get a sense of our position and stay clear of the cornice.
