Gusty southwest winds near ridgetopsearly in the morning worked into the lower elvations by late morning. Temperatures remained in the mid-40's at 12,200 feet for the duration of the trip. Cloud cover increased through the morning, hot and stuffy when the wind gusts were not pushing air around.
Snowpack
The east northeast-facing slopes we focused on today showed a similar 10-15 centimeter thick layer of weak facets below the very dense mid-pack that is comprised almost entirely of the early February storm. Brandon's description from last week, " a brick sitting on facets" still holds true. Extended column tests did not produce any failures in the upper snowpack and the facet layer below the February storm seemed to be too deepp to be affected by tests, although failed when cleaning up the pit walls on the dry to moist layer of depth hoar.
